J. DAVID
SMITH is a registered patent
attorney with about eleven years
experience in the chemical and biotechnical arts. He is a member of the
California State Bar, Colorado Bar and the District of Columbia Bar as
well as the American Intellectual Property Law Association and the
Federal Circuit Bar. He received his J.D. from the University of Denver
College of Law in 1993. Further, he successfully completed the
pre-clinical basic science curriculum at Vanderbilt University School
of Medicine in 1989 and performed research in the field of genetics at
the time. He also has a B.S. degree in Chemistry from Millsaps College.
David has worked with many
start-up companies as well as established
companies providing strategic counseling, patent portfolio management
and prosecution as well as rendering opinions regarding freedom to
operate, patent infringement and validity over a wide range of
technologies including pharmaceuticals, genetics, recombinant DNA,
immunology, gene therapy, microarrays, physical chemistry,
bacteriology, and laboratory devices. He has significant experience
with opposition proceedings before the European and Japanese Patent
Offices and with patent Interference and Reexamination proceedings
before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Additionally, he
has assisted with several patent infringement litigations involving
biotechnology and pharmaceuticals.
He began his career working for Lyon & Lyon in San Diego, California and then worked for Howrey & Simon in Menlo Park, California, Townsend & Townsend & Crew in San Francisco, California and Morrison & Foerster in Palo Alto, California.
